This whole BLACKSQUARE project started because I didn’t know what the inside of an engine looked like.  The HONDA CB550 engine did not disappoint: there was so much complexity, harmony and, in my view, beauty.  And I learned a great deal.  Here are just a few of the photos taken during the rebuild.

IT ALL STARTS WITH AN EMPTY BOTTOM CRANKCASE

AND A LOT MORE CLEANED AND POLISHED PARTS, OF COURSE

THE LOWER CRANKCASE WITH THE MAIN BEARINGS INSTALLED

AND THE KICK-START SPINDLE

KEEP ADDING AND EVENTUALLY THE LOWER CRANKCASE GETS PRETTY WELL PACKED

LOWER CRANCKCASE FULLY LOADED 2

THE UPPER CRANKCASE DOES NOT HAVE AS MANY PARTS IN IT

ALL THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW IS BOLT THEM TOGETHER

A FEW MORE PARTS ARE ADDED TO THE SIDE OF THE CRANKCASE LIKE THE ALTERNATOR, POINTS, AND CLUTCH ASSEMBLIES

THEN THE CYLINDER HEAD

THEN A FEW MORE PARTS

NEARLY DONE.  ALL POLISHED COVERS GO ON, THE REBUILT AND POLISHED CARBURETOR ASSEMBLY IS ATTACHED AND FINALLY, HERE IS THE FINISHED ENGINE:
